Good evening, Kibitzers, and happy Hanukkah to those celebrating!
As usual, I’m way behind. In December, I just dispense with the piddly little lists on scraps of paper and do a spreadsheet. Events and appointments with specific dates; errands that need to be run out in the real world; things to do at home but outdoors (i.e. not in these tattered pajama pants); things to do indoors at home; things that require phone calls; things that can be done on the computer. I regret to say that on some occasions, I’ve needed to note down meals on this sheet, and believe me, I am not one of these “forgets to eat” people under normal circumstances.
Tonight, I see that cell D17 instructs me that I must eat the frozen latkes for supper. I bought the latkes because Hanukkah. I do know how to make them for real, but I guessed correctly that I wouldn’t have that kind of time this week. So, somewhere between writing this and having it post, I will go microwave them, or whatever it says on the box. (Later: it says oven. Toaster oven works.)
Hanukkah is not my holiday, but I enjoy the celebratory traditions of others, and especially the food traditions. Christmas is not my religious holiday either, although it is obviously (to anyone but Republicans) also a secular holiday in this country, so all the Christmas foods are fair game no matter how you look at it... (Sorry! I got engrossed in a recipe for making bread pudding out of leftover panettone. I am so doing that.) I am sure I’ve said here that we steam frozen Chinese buns for Christmas brunch, and I make a chicken pie for dinner.
So, what are your winter holiday foods that you cannot fail to make and/or eat?
And because I need something more entertaining than this brief musing about dinner, and TrueBlueMajority 💙 was kind enough to send me such a thing, here it is. It’s not new but it’s really well done. If you’re not familiar with its component original songs, they are here and here.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.

A second hurricane season has ended without real relief for Puerto Rico.
It is Day 440 since Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico.
PLEASE FOLLOW Denise Oliver Velez and the SOS Puerto Rico group for the latest news about developments in Puerto Rico and the USVI. Denise’s most recent Puerto Rico diary is here. She generally collects resonant tweets at the top of her comment threads, as well, and in the APR’s thread most mornings, to make it easy to retweet. The Daily Kos community has its own project: Puerto Rico resident Bobby Neary (newpioneer) leads a small team dedicated to helping a specific rural elder who was left by the storms without power, water, a roof, or any belongings but a moldy mattress. If you like to see concrete results, this is the project for you. See newpioneer’s diaries for ways to help. See this one in particular, and this comment with photos. See also his lovely and heartbreaking poem.
