Good morning, all you peppy New Day-ists.
Welcome, Welcome, Welcome to New Day Cafe Open Thread
Please, pull up to this great big table on the ethernet, and grab some coffee, or tea and a bite to eat.
All are welcome to join the fun, the silliness, the conversations. If you don’t know...just ask! Some things really do require a bit of explanation.
There will be a few surprises along the way, all good ones, we hope.
We are here to keep building the Daily Kos Community.
We post Mon-Sun at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. On Sunday we go to the C!U!A! posting to show support for all the work being done to promote Democratic candidates/causes. Please to join us there, as well.
Pie fights will be met with outrageous ridicule and insults. Trolls will be incinerated and served at the next group BBQ. As briquettes.
Probably we’ve all wanted to try some food we’ve heard about and seen photos of.
For me once, one such food was pickled herring on smørrebrød. Now, it’s poutine!
A while back, I did get to eat pickled herring with onions on bread when I was in Denmark. I went into a restaurant in Copenhagen, which the guide book had suggested, and sat at a table and waited for my spouse to show up. When the waiter arrived, he was not just cold and distant, but downright rude. The book said this place was the best for what I wanted so I asked for it by pointing at the item on the menu. He snatched the menu from my hand and stomped off. The place was full. Clearly the locals liked this place. Perhaps the waiter was having a bad evening, after having a really bad day..
The food platter and my spouse arrived at about the same time. The waiter was visibly straining to be nicer. I smiled sweetly at him and thanked him nicely. We were both looking at this tiny pot of what could have been butter which came with the main platter, but I was not trusting it to be that. I was sure it was lard. I’d picked up a teeny amount on tip my knife when a man, sitting at a table further up from me, jumped up and came over and told us to avoid it. That it was not butter but indeed lard. I don’t know what transpired, but the waiter reappeared and left us a small pot of butter.
Pickled herrings on rye bread, with onions and pickle bits was delicious, washed down with beer. We finished and paid and left. The waiter was still trying to defrost…
Next morning we would be on our way to Aarhus. From there, the day after, I’d find my way, by train, to Skagen for three days, and then on to Hirtshals for three more days, and then return to meet up with my spouse in Aarhus. And I did eat a fair bit of pickled herring along the way.
The other food I’ve wanted to try, and keep forgetting about, is poutine. I’d have to drive to Roanoke to get a platter. Naw. I’ll wait until I make it to Montreal, Canada again. Some day.
Some pics of poutine! Yum!
