Cody Fenwick, writing at Alternet.com , acknowledges the cross-pressures Democrats find themselves in, vis-a-vis Trump’s crimes. Our base wants him impeached, and the publicly available facts about his crimes, may force House Democrats to impeach him whether or not they want to do so. But, since it would take 20 GOP votes in the Senate after an impeachment trial for Trump to be removed, Democratic leaders rightly fear that any impeachment that Trump survives will make him stronger and hurt Democrats electorally—as happened to Republicans when they impeached Bill Clinton in the 1990s. The U.S. public was not behind the GOP’s impeachment efforts and let them know it at the polls. Current polling shows that, at least at the moment, only 40% of the public want Trump to be impeached.
But ignoring Trump’s crimes has its own risks. So, what are Democrats to do? Fenwick thinks that Democrats should call for Trump to resign. Of course, Trump won’t resign and not very many GOPers, if any, will join Democrats in this call. But, if public hearings in the House and further filings from Mueller, the U. S. attorneys of the SDNY, etc., keep making Trump’s crimes obvious and break through the numbness of the drip, drip, drip (not to mention the propaganda of FIxed Noise), the public may quickly get behind such calls for resignation. And Trump’s resistance could sway more of the public to the necessity of impeachment.
I think Fenwick’s idea is a good one, but what do you Kossacks think? Can we send letters (real, handwritten, snail-mail letters), telegrams, and phone calls to our Congresscritters and Senators (no matter their party affiliation)? Can we get Tom Steyer or whomever to run ads calling for resignation?
If after such calls (and the public hearings), Dems are left with no choice but impeachment, the public should be more understanding. And if we still can’t get those 20 GOP votes in the Senate for removal, the result may help a 2020 Blue Tsunami instead of a Red Backlash. Or so it seems to me.
Note: I will not be available to interact with comments when this publishes. I will interact when as soon as I can. But I set this to publish at 10 a.m. EST so that many Kossacks will read it. I’ll interact when I can get back online. Thanks for your patience. SL.
