Welcome to bookchat where you can talk about anything...books, plays, essays, and audio books. You don’t have to be reading a book to come in, sit down, and chat with us.

Comfort books don’t have to be cozies though they may be, and might even be confrontational or jarring in some ways, but in my thoughts they are books that we want to spend time with when we are needing comfort for whatever reason. They are books from authors we respect. They might not be re-reads, but new books that we have been waiting for from a special author.
...
We may hunger for the wisdom of a particular character or to drop down into a special setting, a world we know and love from previous books.
...
Many people here will be able to guess who my comfort authors and characters are as I mention them often, but here is the list and I hope you will list yours in the comments.
...
Cadfael in the Ellis Peters mysteries set in England and Wales during the time of King Stephen.
Bruno in the Martin Walker mysteries set in southern France in modern times, but with ties to the caves and castles of the past. (Bruno cooks).
Precious in the McCall-Smith No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency books set in Botswana.
Garrett PI by Glen Cook set in a fantasy world with every kind of creature you can imagine.
John 'Black Jack' Geary in the Lost Fleet books by Jack Campbell.
The invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman.
