Good day and welcome to DKos Asheville. This is the weekly DKos Asheville Open Thread for Saturday, March 17th.
We offer this space every weekend to share what we're up to in Western North Carolina and beyond.
We hope this group and others serve to invigorate us locally and regionally here on Daily Kos, building on the sense of community that's grown through our online engagement.
DKos Asheville and other local and state groups can give us all a better sense of connection, a better understanding of who we stand with, work with and share with. We hope this local and wider community can help leverage our orange passion for progressive politics to move the country forward.
Following is the Daily Kos Mission Statement and we are proud to be part of this movement, on the keyboards and on the ground.
Daily Kos fights for a progressive America by empowering its community and allies with information and tools to directly impact the political process.

Scott Donaldson (D)
~ Physician
As a doctor I’ve devoted my entire life to caring for people. I’ve seen the struggles of hardworking families of North Carolina–their American Dream is on life support. Their health and wellbeing are under constant siege: wages stay low, healthcare costs rise, a college education is unaffordable, and even drinking water is contaminated. I’m running for Congress because I believe health promotes wealth. Health care is the first, and actually easiest, of many problems we can solve. As a surgeon I find solutions to emergency problems and as a leader I help my colleagues work towards a common goal–which we all know is a near impossible task today in Washington.

(Scott Donaldson for Congress HQ is a Friendly Thinking Environment where all Doubts, Discouragement and Disinterest are Welcome!!! Come and Let's Make America Think Again!) Healthcare Costs are Trumping every other financial concern in our lives today, It does not HAVE to be so. Please come view FIX IT,a powerful new documentary that reaches across the political and ideological divide to expand support for major healthcare reform. The film was two years in the making, with more than forty voices…
Phillip Price (D)
~ Businessman
My Vision for the people of North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District and for all Americans includes better healthcare, a robust economy, a livable environment, public education, a secure Social Security, strong civil rights protections, support for women’s issues, humane immigration policies, promotion of arts and culture, criminal justice reform, trade policies that respect all workers, and campaign finance reform. The list is long and the work will be hard; bringing a worker’s perspective to the daunting challenges before us is crucial.
Young Voters to Hear Progressive Message
Thursday, 22 March 2018 University Center, Western Carolina University 7:00 p.m.
College Democrats of Western North Carolina have invited Phillip to speak on campus Thursday, March 22, to learn more about his plans to make higher education more affordable. He will meet with the group and other interested students, faculty and non-students in the Raleigh Room of the WCU University Center at 7 p.m.
Throughout the campaign, now approaching 12 months, Phillip has stressed the need to develop an educational system that meets the needs of the 21st century. The current system of tuition-free public education through high school has been in place for 100 years but no longer adequately addresses the demands of a high-tech, internet-based economic system.
Phillip also believes, and will stress to the WNC students, that the crushing debt placed on them by high-interest student loans must be mitigated by reducing interest rates on federally approved loans. The event is open to everyone.
