Father’s Day today is often linked with BBQs, rest, and celebrating being a dad. This year, Disney Pixar is celebrating Father’s Day with a film about what actually makes a good dad, and one that has been on my ‘eagerly awaited’ list for more than a year.
It’s been fourteen years since the original Incredibles film, but in the animated universe very little time as passed. The first Incredibles took on big, adult questions about responsibility, marriage, honesty, and parenting. It did so while staying in a package that young kids could enjoy, but parents would embrace.
This is the secret to a lot of great Pixar films — complex storytelling. It’s no wonder, that this kind of storytelling gets embraced by movie going audiences as the film is expected to gross over $174M this weekend.
I have some hidden love for Incredibles, as the first film’s villain, Syndrome, seemingly predicted the future. His character, an out of control fan who was unhappy with where the super hero efforts went and then decided to protest his lack of inclusion while others were included, seems a little TOO familiar in the responses of some internet fans to recent Star Wars and comic book efforts.
With Incredibles 2 set to make waves at the box office, let’s take a look at what’s hot and new in entertainment this week!
In Film
Incredibles 2 will dominate the box office. The film changes things from the first act, in that this time it will be Elastigirl who finds herself as the breadwinner for the family. With Helen off saving the world, Bob Parr becomes the stay at home father, working to keep his family in order.
As a bit of counter programming, the only other main studio release this weekend is Tag, based on the true story of four men who kept a game of tag going on for decades — they still say they are at it in their fifties. That said, the reviews of “Tag” have.. well, they have not been kind.
New on TV this week
Tonight, AMC premieres the second season of “Talking with Chris Hardwick”, which they had hoped would grow into a future franchise. Now, however, Hardwick is under fire facing allegations of sexual abuse of his prior girlfriend, Chloe Dykstra. Hardwick issued out his own statement, denying the charges, but the one to watch for will be AMC, to see what happens to his — and his show’s — future.
HBO rolls out It Will Be Chaos, a documentary about the troubles that face refugees.
On Friday, Netflix premieres Season 2 of Luke Cage, after a well-received first season.
New in Music
This upcoming Friday brings some big releases on the album front, as Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails release “Bad Witch”, Panic at the Disco rolls out “Pray For the Wicked”, 5 Seconds of Summer releases “Youngblood”, and Bebe Rexha releases “Expectations”. The big news in music this week may be the surprise out of nowhere album drop by Jay-Z and Beyonce in London
What sounds good to you this week? What’s on your viewing schedule or to-do list for Father’s Day weekend?
