Twin Cities Kossacks Open Thread — Sunday, July 15, 2018
Heat advisories this week for parts of Minnesota and it wasn’t just the weather. Temperatures were rising throughout the week with new developments in the MN-Gov and federal races.
Tim Pawlenty launched an ad accusing his Republican rival, Jeff Johnson, of supporting higher taxes, wasteful spending and Obamacare (MPR reports). Johnson generated his own heat by announcing this week that if he were elected Governor of Minnesota, he would seek to halt immigration to the state. Twin Cities Kossack FlannelGuy has a post about Johnson’s pandering to Trump primary voters on immigration. FG also has a story about immigration and “No Go Zones” in the MN-Senate race.
Bernie Sanders brought some heat and light to Minnesota this week, campaigning for Keith Ellison in Minneapolis and Duluth in support of the U.S. Representatives’ bid to be state’s next Attorney General. MPR News reports in addition to endorsing Ellison, Sanders blasted Tump as a “Billionare bully” who is also a “pathological liar.” The other DFL candidates competing for the AG job are attorney Matt Pelikan, former Ramsey County Attorney Tom Foley, former Minnesota Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman and State Rep. Debra Hilstrom.
In MN-03, incumbent Eric Paulsen is raising a sweat by paddling madly to put some distance between himself and that huge Trump rock in the river dead ahead. Paulsen is trying to avoid racking up his canoe with his moderate west metro constituents with an image redo as a modern day Sigurd Olson who is independent of Trump. FlannelGuy has a post on the ad and why Paulsen’s claim to be an environmentalist is all wet.
Early voting for the August primary has started. Joedemocrat cast his ballot in the DFL primary and has a post explaining his journey from initially supporting Tim Walz for to voting this week for Erin Murphy for govenor.
Several other posts of note by Twin Cities Kossacks community members, and others, on the Brett Kavanaugh nomination for the U.S. Supreme Court:
- Thutnose V hit the rec list with his questions for a Constitutional literalist.
- Aldous J Pennyfarthing has Al Franken’s 25 questions for checkmating Kavanaugh.
- Poopdogcomedy has posts on Tina Smith’s call to reject Kavanaugh’s nomination.
Things will be very cool at our Twin Cities Kossacks meetup next week. Here are the details:
- The Twin Cities Kossacks will have our next monthly meetup at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Turtle Bread, 4205 E 34th St, Minneapolis, MN 55406. Please note this is the Turtle Bread in the Longfellow neighborhood, which is different Turtle Bread location than where we met previously.
Can you join us for our next meetup? Our current RSVPs are posted below. Kosmail me or post below. to RSVP, even if you’re just a maybe. It helps to know how many are coming so we can grab enough chairs. I’ve had a change in plans and can’t make it next week, so I’m looking for someone else who has attended in the past to be the convener and to take a pic to post.
