A subdued Northam came out of seclusion describing the past few days spent grappling with the meaning of white privilege. He has spend the week meeting with African American Leaders while “ in seclusion all week, using tunnels to shuttle between the mansion and the nearby building where he has an office. He has began his new journey by reading "The Case for Reparations" by Ta-Nahesi Coates, a few chapters of "Roots" by Alex Haley to bring him up to date on his own understanding of Black history.
Giving his first interview since his racist KKK/blackface photo surfaced, Northam says he wants to set up a reconciliation tour that will have him traveling all over the state talking about race and healing. He is promising sensitivity training in the Cabinet, agencies and schools He is promising a gazzilion things to the community including working on moving monuments out of the public and into museums.
Some of the notable quotes from the interview are:-
"The things that I did back in medical school and - and - in San Antonio were insensitive and I have learned since that they were very offensive. We learn from our mistakes and I'm a stronger person,"
“Another black lawmaker made a powerful point about white privilege, white person who makes a mistake gets a second chance, while a black person might not. "That really helped put things in perspective for me to better understand why someone of white privilege has the opportunities that they have when an African-American . . . doesn't,"
Note:- He still maintains that He is NOT the person in the KKK/blackface robe. Says an "independent investigation" being conducted by Eastern Virginia Medical School to help clear that up.
There you have it folks, The Virginia Gov grovelling on his knees begging for a second chance. Good luck.
