When Kansas Representatives put forward laws regarding gay marriages, they were ridiculed broadly. Thomas Witt, Executive Director for Equality Kansas, offered these thoughts:
“The two marriage bills introduced today represent the most vile, hateful, and disrespectful legislation I have seen in my 14 years as Equality Kansas’ lobbyist. Every year, we see bills that restrict, remove, and limit the rights of LGBT Kansans, but never have we seen this level of extremist vitriol laid out in legislative language. These bills combined are 18 pages of insults and name calling. Fred Phelps would be proud. The sponsors of these bills should be ashamed of themselves.”
Now, Representative David French, one of the co-sponsors, offered his thoughts to his county party. Rather than back down in regards to legislation that refers to LGBTQ in ways to make it a cult or secret society, he decides to double down.
The legislation, which apparently reflects how he “feels” contains these segments:
WHEREAS, Instead of having a cross, the ten commandments icon, or star and crescent, the LGBTQ secular humanist community has the gay pride rainbow colored flag to symbolize its faith-based worldview; and
WHEREAS, The history of parody marriages is that most forms were illegal until recently or they remain illegal today, and they continue to erode community standards of decency; and
Now that the Kansas legislature has openly gay representatives and an openly gay US Congressmember, it’s always good to know that a state elected official is proud to have these thoughts as “speaking from his heart”.
