Good evening, Kibitzers! I’m in for side pocket this evening, as he’d been planning to go visit his kids. He had to cancel at the last minute because of snow, but since he didn’t have time to prepare anything, I am here and you’ll see him on Tuesday.
Seems that a lot of locations are getting slammed with winter storms today. Our Midwest people in the Inoculation Project this morning were getting snow on top of a layer of ice created by earlier melting and refreezing, and that’s pretty much what will happen here overnight — there’s still some nasty thick ice in my driveway, and it’s supposed to start getting snowed on any time now. The snow turns into sleet around 11 pm ET, and then, “Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.” I hate the sleet accumulations, don’t you?
I’d like to speak about a magical substance that is already perfectly legal in every state. Once, many years ago at a company function with a casual dress code, I won a monetary prize, dispensed off the cuff by the company president, for wearing a sweatshirt depicting a molecule of what he characterized as his “favorite substance”. It’s shown at left. Honestly, if pressed I’d have guessed nicotine as his favorite, but this molecule, caffeine, was right up there. He was one of those buzzy balls of jumpy energy who seem to live on nothing but coffee and cigarettes.
No one has ever described me as a “buzzy ball of jumpy energy”, but I do like my coffee. Lately, I’ve been drinking it from my “Late Show with Stephen Colbert Shutdown Mug”, which reads, “Don’t even talk to me until I’ve had my paycheck.” (You can still buy them at that link; all proceeds benefit World Central Kitchen.)
But I digress. A coffee-themed picture gallery follows, gathered from many sources. If you are one of them, thank you!
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.

A second hurricane season has ended without real relief for Puerto Rico.
It is Day 515 since Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico.
PLEASE FOLLOW Denise Oliver Velez and the SOS Puerto Rico group for the latest news about developments in Puerto Rico and the USVI. Denise generally collects resonant tweets at the top of her comment threads, as well, and in the APR’s thread most mornings, to make it easy to retweet. If you tweet or FB, please share something about Puerto Rico and USVI regularly.

The Daily Kos community has its own project: Puerto Rico resident Bobby Neary (newpioneer) leads a small team dedicated to helping a specific rural elder who was left by the storms without power, water, a roof, or any belongings but a moldy mattress. If you like to see concrete results, this is the project for you. See newpioneer’s diaries for ways to help. See this one in particular, and this comment with photos. See also his lovely and heartbreaking poem.
