So a 1971 Playboy interview with legendary actor John Wayne has resurfaced in which he said this:
“With a lot of blacks, there’s quite a bit of resentment along with their dissent, and possibly rightfully so. But we can’t all of a sudden get down on our knees and turn everything over to the leadership of the blacks. I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to the point of responsibility.”
Okay, that could hardly be more racist. No wonder Wayne is such a conservative darling. Oh, but no one in this day and age would ever defen …
Oh, HI Laura Ingraham! I didn’t see you there.
In a Fox News interview with Raymond Arroyo, after Arroyo said — referring to criticism of Wayne as well as the recent defacement of a statue depicting an iconic post-World War II kiss in Times Square — “We’re judging the past in light of shifting moral, ethic and cultural codes of today; we can’t do that,” Ingraham chimed in:
“They’re either defacing statues or pulling them down. … This is what the Taliban does. The Taliban used to rip down historical markers, destroy churches. ISIS did the same thing, does the same thing. They don’t want any vestige of what was. Even if it’s bad, they don’t want any vestige, even if it’s good they don’t want it.”
Arroyo’s response? First he calls Wayne an iconic image of America, and then he screeches, “They’re impugning America!”
Then he brings up Jussie Smollet for some reason because … well, fuck if I know. Maybe his producer has given him a daily quota of Jussie Smollett mentions and he was a bit off the pace?
So, to sum up, you think people who hold vile antebellum racist beliefs are “America”? Nice of you to finally say it out loud. Hmm, I respectfully disagree.
Here’s the whole sordid thing, in case you’re interested:
