In Malcom, Iowa a couple of hundred people gathered to listen to Bernie talk about why he’s running. In an experienced organizer’s move, Bernie made it interactive and asked the crowd to participate and help him explain what the campaign was about. A 10 year old girl offered up a response, and the interaction between her, Bernie and the crowd is heart-warming.
I’ve transcribed the exchange, it starts at 36 minutes in the full video (errors are mine):
Bernie: This campaign is about bringing the American people together around an agenda that is widely supported by the way and that is prepared to take on very powerful special interests. Now when we talk about our campaign being us not me, do we know what we mean by that? What do I mean by that? Anyone want to help me out here?
10 year old: Peace and Love and accomplish... better achievements... and better students… (inaudible, she didn’t have the mike)...
Bernie: This I cannot believe
10 year old: and we can also get I think that maybe like things will be fair if we work together, i think more families can pay their bills if we work together, things that they can achieve, more people can get out of jail, and people can have better lives in America.
Bernie: This is unbelievable, how old is she
10 year old: I’m ten years old
Bernie: I see a future president from Malcom Iowa right here... Look she said it, what can I tell you. It’s a little bit embarrassing to be told the truth by a ten year old, but what can I say. — FaceBook live link
Bernie’s campaign seems to be striking a chord with kids all across Iowa, and their parents as well. Here’s Natasha Jasmine, who helped introduce Bernie to her community in Iowa back in 2016. She took her 11 year old daughter to meet him this weekend.
