Democratic New York Representative Jerry Nadler told CNN on Tuesday afternoon that if Attorney General William Barr sends Congress a redacted version of the Mueller report, he will immediately issue a subpoena for the full report.
In testimony before a subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday morning, Barr stated that he would have a redacted version of the Mueller report, without the accompanying grand jury testimony, ready for release “within the week.” Barr also made it clear that he had no intention of releasing the full report. He stated that he would work with Nadler and with Republican Senator Lindsay Graham to address specific redactions if they had “reasons” but didn’t offer to provide an unredacted version. Barr also stated that he would not issue a request to a judge that he considers necessary for the release of grand jury material.
Nadler, who is the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, had earlier sought and gained the authority to issue a subpoena to Barr. However, he did not immediately issue the subpoena. Now, clearly not pleased with the statements that Barr made during his morning testimony, Nadler has made it clear that if the version of the report he receives contains redactions, the subpoena will be issued.
What happens from there … is completely unclear.
