Well all the mystery about what was going on with the War Powers Act Resolution to end US military involvement in Saudi Arabia’s War in Yemen is over. Yesterday, the Resolution passed by the House on April 4 was vetoed by President Trump. Here’s a portion of Trump’s statement on the veto put out in a White House Press Release:
“This resolution is an unnecessary, dangerous attempt to weaken my constitutional authorities, endangering the lives of American citizens and brave service members, both today and in the future,...”
and
“We cannot end the conflict in Yemen through political documents,” Mr. Trump said. “Peace in Yemen requires a negotiated settlement.”
Yes, both of these are totally ridiculous statements not even worthy of comment. Hopefully, the actual text of the veto sent back to the Senate makes more sense and includes what Trump finds wrong with the resolution as the Constitution requires, but I doubt it.
Unfortunately, the veto will only mean more suffering and death for the Yemeni civilians."
The Norwegian Refugee Council said Wednesday that if Trump "was truly concerned about civilian life," he would "ensure that the US-supported Saudi-led coalition stop breaking the laws of war and depriving millions of Yemenis of life-saving assistance."
It says the United States is "deepening and prolonging" the crisis and "civilians are paying the price."
It also strengthens the hand of Jared’s buddy and Khashoggi killer, Saudi Prince MBS to continue to reign bombs, famine and disease on over 10 million human beings in Yemen.
The Resolution passed the Senate by a vote of 54 to 46 and passed the House by a vote of 247 to 175. That means to override Trump’s veto we would need to get 12 more Republican Senators and 42 more House Republicans to vote “yes” on an override. Regardless of the fact that the Republican math makes such an override a daunting task, since the vetoed resolution has to go back to the House of origin, in this case the Senate, I am sure Mitch will make sure it never even gets to the floor.
So the Genocide will continue with US support. Sad! And we wonder why places like Yemen are terrorist breeding grounds!
