The #SheThePeople Presidential Forum just wrapped up in my hometown, Houston, TX. The major players were there (sans Mayor Pete and a yet to announce Biden). The forum was held at Texas Southern University, an HBCU and home to the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs and the Thurgood Marshall Law School.
The event featured candidates addressing audience questions, with each having his or her own time on the stage. Sen. Elizabeth Warren was the final speaker and received a standing ovation from the audience. Overall, the candidates provided substantive responses to powerful questions. Standout responses included Harris’ thoughts on the war on drugs, Bernie’s call for a representative Supreme Court, Warren’s personal story on growing up poor and her plans to address income inequality, and Beto’s call to free Dreamers from the threat of deportation.
Here are some highlights:
And Twitter responds:
This was hilarious:
There was a tense moment, when Bernie was asked about race and he responded that he marched with MLK.
Although not a direct debate among the candidates, the winner seems to be Warren, who presented answers with plans that resonated with the women in the audience.
The primary season is getting interesting, and I think this Tweet sums it up best:
