The strongest argument you could make against Republicans when it comes to abortion is that the right to an abortion is about as Conservative a position as you can get.
Supposedly the Conservative ideology is all about keeping the government out of our private lives of American citizens. Choosing or not choosing an abortion is about as private as one can get with their decisions. If the government wants to get into the business of legislating that, then the Conservative position, no brainer, should be about respecting the freedom of American citizens, and leaving it in their hands.
Oh, but the one great Republican justification always comes down to defending the lives of the unborn child. But you know what, when it comes to another great Conservative issue — guns — suddenly they couldn’t care less about what lives are at stake. Suddenly the grandstanding about defending innocent lives is nowhere to be found. They want to stand behind the Second Amendment and say that, unlike abortion, the right to bear arms is a Constitutional right? Fine then, you can have that — but stand there and back up what that means — that you don’t give a fuck how many adults, children, and likely even pregnant women and their unborn will become victims of gun violence because you want unfettered freedoms when it comes to guns. Actually stand by the body counts that will go along with freedom to own guns — but then shut the hell up about giving a damn about these unborns’ lives. If these Republicans were really true to their Conservative ideals about individual rights, they would be just as livid about lawmakers legislating women’s bodies as they are about guns — and of course, they’re not.
When it comes to a position for supporting abortion rights, I think we can all think of numerous such justifications. But really, it should never have to get past their own Conservative ideology, to find a sound argument for supporting abortion rights.
Because no other argument, other than the Conservative position, is quite as effective as laying bare the hypocrisy and stupidity of all these Republican asshats.
