The current school year is coming to a close and with it my substitute teaching assignments, and soon I will be in school myself working on my Teaching Credential.
I have been working as a substitute almost every day for the past few months. I’ve found in the past that substitute assignments get sparse in the last couple of weeks, and I have not yet had an assignment on the last day. I figure that most teachers want to be there on the last day to say goodbye to their kids.
Recently I heard a couple of teachers in a teacher’s lounge talking about the last day and how some classes they hated to see go, but there were others that we “good riddance” and little missing of those students. I guess it all depends on the students in the class how the teacher will feel.
Most of the districts have ended their year, and only one remains in session. As the school year comes to a close and my impending end of being a substitute teacher approaches, I have mixed feelings. I enjoy being a substitute teacher. I enjoy being able to go from class to class and school to school and do every grade from preschool to twelfth grade. I enjoy that I am so influential with kids. Thursday I had a kindergarten class and as I was walking them to lunch, a fifth-grade girl started waving and shouting “I LOVE YOU MISTER GREEN”. I enjoy that I am known everywhere in town whenever I go out. For example, this afternoon, I went to the store and while putting my goodies in my car, I heard a young voice say “IS THAT MISTER GREEN”, to which I looked over and waved and said, “YES IT IS”. I would continue being a sub for the rest of my career if it paid a living wage, but it doesn’t. I will miss the public recognition.
My life is in for some major changes as I evolve in my post-Dad-Caregiver life. I think of these days as the “interregnum”, which is a term for the time between when a king has died (Dad) and the new king (me) takes over. I was with Dad for almost every day for about twenty years and every day is hard, and in fact, I consider this part of my life to be the second hardest of my life, with only the years after my cancer diagnosis to be worse.
My teaching credential courses begin on Monday, June 17. It’s going to be five days a week and I have three classes this summer. The first four-week class will be either morning or afternoon, although I hope to be able to sign up for the afternoon class so I might do summer school subbing in the mornings. Then the second four-week classes are both morning and afternoon after that.
I am currently applying for intern teaching positions at various schools. Interns are the last ones hired, as teaching positions go first to already-credential teachers. I may not know where I will be interning until late summer. I hope I will be in a position in my community in a school I’ve been a substitute teacher at. However, it’s quite possible that I could end up with a long commute in Solidad or Greenfield. I am hoping to be in a third or fourth-grade class, but I’ll take whatever I can get.
I have had a series of flubs and errors from the university. First, they miscalculated my GPA and initially said my GPA was too low, and I pointed out, with a threat of a lawsuit, that they were ignoring all the units I had from a community college which raised my GPA more than a full point. I think the clerk who did the application was merely being lazy. Then, they told me that they had sent me a userID and password, but as much as I looked through my emails, there was no such information. Finally, they told me that my UserID is the same UserID I had when I was an undergrad there 14 years ago, and they expect me to remember that long ago account information, which I don’t. So now I have to call IT support on Monday morning to ask them to recover my 14-year-old userID and password. I am having flashbacks to how incompetent CSU Monterey Bay was back then, and how it apparently hasn’t changed much.
If you are still reading, thank you. I have been trying to raise enough money for tuition, and I’m still short, as I list below. There is no financial aid during the summer. I’m hoping to get a payment plan, but I have no answer to my asking yet. If you can help, I would appreciate it.
Running Total Raised so far
for Teaching Credential
from all Sources:
Raised: $ 1525.00
Goal: $4000.00
Remainder: $2475.00
Donations have slowed in recent days. I hope that with the coming of the new month people can afford to chip in and push me over the top.
I start my teaching credential classes on June 17, so that’s the deadline for raising tuition. It would be a big shame and a personal tragedy for me if after all I’ve gone through to get to the point of admission and I can’t enroll due to lack of tuition, and thus have to wait for another year, at least.
Please help if you can, even $10 would help as I know there are many of you out there that have supported me in the past.

I start my teaching credential classes on June 17, so that’s the deadline for raising tuition.
It would be a big shame and a personal tragedy if after all I’ve gone through to get to the point of admission and I can’t enroll due to lack of tuition funds. I would have to wait for another year, at least, to try again to be a teacher. In fact, should I not be able to enroll this year, I may have to radically alter my life and I may never become a teacher.
Please help if you can, even $10 would help if enough people chipped in.

Raised: $ 2066.00
Goal: $5000.00
Remainder: $2934.00
I start my teaching credential classes on June 17, so that’s the soft deadline for raising tuition. I may have a few more days after that to pay, and I MAY get a payment plan, but ultimately either of those cases is only postponing the inevitable payment due.

Please help if you can, even $10 would help if enough people chipped in. I need to get at least to the $4288.50 due to be able to enroll, even if I have to deal with living expenses later.

I now have enough to cover tuition. I need money both for other fees that keep coming up, such as $150 for my intern credential, as well as living expenses for July and August. I will likely need more than I’ve set here ($5000), and I will reevaluate my full summer needs by this next Friday.
Classes are very time consuming and dense and confusing. I find I spend more time learning about philosophical theories about teaching than in actually learning how to teach.
