The University of Alabama System on Sunday issued a statement reiterating that its decision to return the largest donation in school history was based on Hugh Culverhouse Jr.’s attempts to influence administration of the law school.
On Friday, system trustees approved the return of Culverhouse’s donation and the removal of his name from the law school. Also on Friday, Culverhouse wrote an opinion piece published in the Washington Post headlined “I gave the University of Alabama $26.5 million. They gave it back when I spoke out about abortion.”
Culverhouse was referring to a near-total abortion ban passed in May by the Alabama Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Kay Ivey. On May 29, Culverhouse talked to media outlets, calling for a boycott of the Alabama over the abortion law.
“Our decision was never about the issue of abortion,” according to UA’s statement. “It was always about ending the continued outside interference by the donor in the operations of the University of Alabama School of Law.”
