Good morning, Newdists. We’re all familiar, I think, with some of the most horrifying retro recipes—they’ve been shared in this community before. I’ve often wondered, though, what it would be like to recreate and taste some of those midcentury abominations. What would it be like to eat lime cottage cheese Jell-O filled with seafood salad? Or “crown roast of frankfurters” filled with cabbage? I’ve never been curious enough to actually try, of course, but thankfully I don’t have to—there is a YouTuber who has made and taste-tested these recipes so I don’t have to.
Emmy Cho is the person behind the emmymadeinjapan YouTube channel—it has been around since 2010 and is wildly popular, but I somehow missed it until just recently. Now that I’ve found it, I’m hooked. It’s a channel that mainly revolves around tasting different (often bizarre) foods. One of the most memorable for me was her ox penis soup video. Sometimes she eats MREs from around the world. Sometimes her viewers send her various foods from their home countries to try on camera. No matter how weird or gross the food, Emmy (almost) always has something nice to say about it, and sometimes she gives her viewers lessons on culture and history along the way. Emmy is the cure for my depression—whenever I’m feeling down, her bubbly personality and sense of humor bring me up again.
My favorite videos, however, are from her retro food series, in which she tries to recreate some of the most horrendous midcentury recipes. She goes through the (sometimes difficult) process of making the food, and then she gives a descriptive taste test at the end. Surprisingly, many of the recipes taste good, according to Emmy—although some of them really are as bad as they look. I thought I’d share a few of my favorites this morning. If you like what you see, there is so, so much more where these came from!
What do you want to chat about this morning?
All are welcome to join the fun, the silliness, the conversations. If you don’t know...just ask! Some things really do require a bit of explanation.
There will be a few surprises along the way, all good ones, we hope.
We are here to keep building the Daily Kos Community.
We post Mon-Sun at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. On Sunday we go to the C!U!A! posting to show support for all the work being done to promote Democratic candidates/causes. Please to join us there, as well.
