Jobs are booming in Border Patrol and ICE, with job pitches like “Working for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) means keeping your country safe from dangerous people and materials attempting to cross our border” and “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) employees protect America from the cross-border crime and illegal immigration that threaten national security and public safety.” But what if the deportation forces and concentration camp managers were honest about what they’re looking for? What might that look like?
Obviously anyone who wants to work for Border Patrol or ICE has to have a baseline level of comfort with tearing children from their parents’ arms. That goes without saying, right?
Stemming from that aspect of the job, a complete lack of empathy or imagination would be helpful—it would be such a bummer to get home from work, look at your family, and realize that the families you spent the day separating love each other as much as you and your kids love each other.
Anosmia a plus—you’re going to be dealing with rotting food and unusable toilets and you’ll be denying a lot of people the means to bathe. Odors will be a feature of your work day, so not being able to smell anything at all may help.
You’ll need to think that the phrase “just following orders” will absolve you of literally any action.
