A “funny” thing happened at the shelter this week
On Tuesday, although the temperatures were too high for long, slow strolls around the grounds, I managed to get myself out the door relatively early and to the SPCA. Most days are rather bland: Get dog. Walk dog. Cuddle dog. *rinse and repeat. Tuesday started out exactly like that.
My first pup, Brody, was a medium sized dog (a black/brown basenji mix) and 8 years young. We did the miniature stroll, had an animated conversation about which breeds were the best (we agreed to disagree) and ended up on the couch in the volunteers lounge. After returning him to his kennel, I decided to choose “Pinky” for my second choice.
Pinky is an energetic (read as young) chihuahua mix, 3 years young (black with a white neck). As I entered the kennel, I noticed his Kong treat on the floor and, rather than step on it, I chose to move it. Big mistake. As I squatted down to pick it up, Pinky started getting excited at the upcoming walk. Did I mention his age and energy level? He started jumping up and down. Unfortunately, the last time he jumped up, (I was still down low) he hit me in the nose with his hard little head.
Had there not been actual employees working in the kennel next to us, I am sure there would’ve been some colorful language coming from me. One did comment that “it must have hurt” and I agreed. Although my eyes and nose watered, there was very little bloodshed so I didn’t need to write my injury up. Although I have a noticeable “fur rash” across the middle of my nose and it’s bruised, I survived.
Animal Shelters Waive Adoption Fees
The "Mutts Across America" campaign has donated more than $750,000 in grants to more than 250 shelters since it started in 2015.
MuttNation Foundation also holds adoption drives at Miranda's concerts, the CMA Music Fest, and the Grand Ole Opry.
