Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post, from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum. This series was conceived as a haven where folks can drop in to share conversation, ideas, weather reports, and music. Feel free to leave a note, comment, picture, or tune. As always the diarist gets to sleep in, and may show up long after the post is published. Or not. So you know, it's a feature, not a bug.
We have been asked, “Why the copyright notice.”
The purpose of this notice is to protect the intellectual property of the diarist/writer. Said property includes writings, original ideas, photographs, and images by the diary author, who retains ownership of his/her own material and ideas. This notice does not affect commenters in the least, because everyone owns their own material.
Pull up a chair, get your cup of tea, coffee, or other favorite morning beverage and join us for a neighborly start to the day ahead.
Jerry Garcia was born Jerome John Garcia on August 1, 1942.
Jerry Garcia died on August 9, 1995.
The nine days from August 1 through August 9 are now celebrated around the world as “The Days Between.”
Ironically, The Days Between was one of the last and most powerful songs that came from the collaboration between Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia. Robert Hunter was the lyricist-poet, while Jerry Garcia wrote the melody.
There were days
And there were days
And there were days between
Summer flies and August dies
This version of Days Between was recorded in concert at Portland, Oregon May 29, 1995. Six weeks later, Jerry was gone.
This is the first of a two-part tribute to the musical genius that was Jerry Garcia. Next week we will take an in-depth look at The Days Between, one of the most powerful poems ever to come from the pen of Robert Hunter. However, as Jerry pointed out on several occasions, Hunter was a lyricist, not a songwriter. The poem would have remained a poem had not Jerry poured his soul into creating the song.
Next Wednesday, we will go over the poignant and brilliant song that was taking the Grateful Dead in a new direction, musically.
Next week, Sockpuppet and I will be attending a Days Between celebration at a popular music theatre/restaurant near us. We will report on that, hopefully with a few photos.
This is an open thread. Get your favorite morning beverage, pull up a chair and join us for sharing ideas, jokes, weather, music, and memories. Never forget the memories.
