Bad Habits
I know that most if not all KTK readers are pure of heart and mind, and thus are free of bad habits. In case that is an incorrect assumption, I’ll remind us of a few.
Procrastination.
Cigarette smoking
Poor posture
Nail biting
Constantly checking phone
Facebook
Forgetting to say Thank You
Nagging people about bad habits
Every once in a while, a bad habit might possibly intrude upon almost anyone (even y'all).
In many sports, follow-through is key. When a golfer looks up before his or her stroke is complete, to see where the ball is headed, the ball will likely be topped and dribble away. In checking on the phenomenon I discovered it is a problem in bowling as well, and several other sports. But nowhere is it more important than in pool.
After a pool stroke, one ideally will stay motionless until the ball is in the pocket. It is a difficult discipline; even pros will move their body during a shot, but so infrequently that the TV announcers will remark on it.
Although I am a seasoned player, I have the habit of jumping up. Since pool is a game requiring precise accuracy, when one's body moves during a stroke, the ball is likely to miss. Since this is a common problem, other players have offered me suggestions, from hypnotism to the idea one pro offered, (and he said it worked for someone): hold a lit cigarette behind the neck.
Problems such as this require creative solutions. All it should take is a forceful reminder on every shot, something I am unlikely to miss. What to do?
My Kitchen Table Kibitzing last week included a discussion of tattoos and my observation that almost everyone has them. Well I have joined the crowd. I know some tattoos urge direct action: Make Love Not War for instance. But I’ll wager very few give sports advice.
Those of you who read last week’s diary already know: it’s a temporary tattoo, which will only last a week. But I did it for the humorous response I expect to get at the pool hall tomorrow. We’re acquaintances but most of us don’t know each other that well. I figure I will have established my reputation as an eccentric which may or may not be a good thing, who knows?
As always, this is an open thread. Discuss anything, since it’s doubtful any of you have any bad habits at all.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
Please do not attack Democratic candidates or drag primary fights into our community. |
