Before winning the special election Republican primary for North Carolina’s 9th congressional district, Dan Bishop was best known as a state senator who sponsored a headline-grabbing “bathroom bill” that voided anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people. Bishop is running for the same congressional seat that has been vacant since last year’s election was deemed tainted by fraud perpetrated by GOP operatives. Today, he decided to skip out on the district’s NAACP candidate forum — the only candidate running in the race not to show up.

It should come as no surprise that Bishop is making a practice of ignoring minority voters. After all, he is a candidate who defended Trump after he led explicitly racist chants from the crowd at his campaign rally. He also mocked Democrats responding to the El Paso shooting, instead of actually addressing gun violence or Trump’s racist rhetoric fueling white nationalism in this country. It’s certainly a sign of the type of representative Bishop portends to be — one that must be defeated.
