The third shooting resulting in mass fatalities in 10 days was narrowly averted Wednesday. A standoff between police and a suspect in Philadelphia resulted in 6 officers being shot and one injured in a related car accident, but thankfully all escaping with their lives.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, responded to the terror the city was gripped in for the long afternoon by blasting Congress for not acting. "This government, both at the federal and state level, doesn't want to do anything about getting these guns off the streets and getting them out of the hands of criminals."
This government means Mitch McConnell. There are two perfectly good bills to start with sitting on his desk right now in the Senate, passed by the House months ago. They would expand background checks, something Americans overwhelmingly support, including 77% of Republicans.
McConnell is stubbornly refusing to act. He won't call the Senate back from August recess to vote on those bills. He's playing the NRA's old game of delaying action and working behind the scenes to undermine and weaken existing efforts to curb gun proliferation. He's actively working to get more people killed.
By some instance of remarkable luck, no one died in Wednesday's shootout in Philadelphia. But there's another mass shooting waiting just around the corner. In American in the 2000s, there's always another massacre about to happen and the entire nation lives in fear that it will be their city, their neighborhood, their child's school where it happens. That's on Mitch McConnell's shoulders.
This has to end. Please give $1 to our nominee fund to help Democrats end McConnell's career as majority leader.
