I’m not seeing enough love for Pakalolo, Angmar, Meteor Blades or OccupyStephanie’s climate posts recently so thought I would chime in quickly on the elephant in the room. Or , as Catherine Ingram put it “For you, it’s not just the elephant in the room; it’s the elephant on fire in the room, and yet you feel you can rarely say its name.” www.catherineingram.com/…
So yeah- it did indeed hit that mark “According to data released in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) monthly climate analysis, a weather station in Sweden north of the Arctic Circle hit a stunning 94.6 Fahrenheit (34.8 degrees Celsius) last month.”earther.gizmodo.com/… [FYI- that’s a higher temp than NYC last month]
And it appears to be ‘baked in’ ….This from a Woods Hole research paper :
“The doubling [emphasis added] of [Beaufort Gyre] halocline heat content over the past three decades appears attributable to a warming of the source waters that ventilate the layer, where this warming is due to sea ice losses in the Chukchi Sea that leave the surface ocean more exposed to incoming solar radiation in summer. The effects of an efficient local ice-albedo feedback are thus not confined to the surface ocean/sea ice heat budget but, in addition, lead to increased heat accumulation in the ocean interior that has consequences far beyond the summer season. [emphasis added] Strong stratification and weak mechanical mixing in the BG halocline ensure that significant summertime heat remains in the halocline through the winter.advances.sciencemag.org/…
Thats right- “doubled”
That’s right- “increased heat ….in the ocean interior”
That’s right “significant heat remains...through the winter”
“As an isolated data point, it would be shocking. But coupled with a host of other maladies, from no sea ice within 125 miles of Alaska to the unruly fires ravaging Siberia, it’s an exclamation point on the climate crisis.”
The WaPo article on the amount of plus 2 degreeC the US is now seeing [see Ingmars diary today or MB’s last night] just barely mentioned that the Gulf of Maine is heating up….Heating up? Last year it saw a total of 45 days that were NOT in extraordinary heat eos.org/...
It is past time to ask yourself: What events do I have to be aware of to announce to myself: Oh- THIS is the tipping point….
It is past time to ask our candidates : Why are you not confronting this every day ?— besides our lives and deaths, besides being “only” the Right Thing To Do, it is — and will be — a continued litany of talking points …
