Yesterday we went to the state fair, and along the Main Concourse there is always a booth for the “Cast Your Kernel” poll for political candidates, where you drop a kernel of corn into the jar of the political candidate of your choice. It’s not a scientific poll at all (nothing stops you from swinging by and voting again later in the day, or the next day if you’re there, except maybe the volunteers recognizing you, and you’re doing it in public, so it you’re visiting the fair with your Trumper family, you might not want to broadcast that you’re secretly pushing for Kamala Harris, for example), but it can sometimes give some interesting results.
The booth has clear jars with photos and names of each Democratic candidate, as well as a jar for Donald Trump and one for Bill Weld. As you might expect, the Democratic ones are much less full because there are so many candidates, so votes are split among many people.
We went by the booth in the late morning yesterday and what I found interesting was that, while Donald Trump’s jar was nearly full (and they do periodically empty them of course), Bill Weld’s jar had a surprising number of kernels in it, being more than half full.
So maybe there are a lot of farmers not so excited about Trump’s trade war, after all. Weld is going to crash and burn in the end, but maybe some of these folks will decide to stay home on Election Day 2020 rather than give Donald their vote.
Anyway, not scientific by any means but I thought it a rather interesting bit of anecdotal information.
