This diary will be brief, as I’m running out the door.
Yesterday Beto O’Rourke issued a sweeping gun safety proposal that is the most ambitious of any gun plan to date.
It contains all the usual — which is not to say excellent — proposals that have become central planks of the Democratic party: an assault weapons ban; mandatory background checks; closing the gun show loophole; and red flag laws.
It also contains some of the best ideas that have emerged in recent weeks: a mandatory assault weapon buy-back program and a weapons licensing provision.
But it also has the most robust proposal for tackling domestic terrorism, which is fueling gun violence in the US. To that end his plan calls for the creation of a division within the DOJ & DHS for combating domestic terrorism and white supremacist movements and a revision of the legal code (Section 230) to hold social media companies accountable for hate speech on their platforms.
Today, however, the most remarkable thing happened. Beto O’Rourke went to a gun show in Arkansas to talk to gun enthusiasts about gun control. Folks, this is how we reclaim the national dialogue. This is how we begin to close the chasm in our national fabric. THIS IS HOW WE WIN. Wow!
UPDATE: He is pulling no punches!
