When I bought Lullaby Road by James Anderson, I wasn’t sure if it was a sequel to The Never Open Desert Diner or just a story with the same main character. It did turn out to be a sequel, sort of, but it can be a stand-alone book as well.

It is a very powerful story. Because of his good heart, Ben starts his truck route through the desert winter with troubles that only increase. Behind the troubles lie mysterious messages in a note and from a police officer and from three ladies. It is a wonderful book and I don’t want to include reviews that tell too much of the story to spoil it. But the reviews I read agreed with me that this is a superb story.

I have driven home in blizzards twice which were so bad I arrived in my driveway shaking and it was only six miles with guardrails in the bad spots for which I am grateful, so I had a lot of empathy with Ben driving 100 miles on a very bad night.

The Louise Penny mysteries have a story arc, but Kingdom of the Blind is for sure the sequel of Glass Houses and they need to be read in order. They are very powerful stories as always with Inspector Gamache. I have ordered her new one, A Better Man, that is coming out in a few days.

I consider a bad sequel to be one that lumps along, being boring and wasting my time. The danger is that I will stop reading the series. I usually am happy to find that the next book picks up the pace, but if it doesn’t…well, bye, bye. I also get upset when the author feels it is necessary to have more and more violence to get my attention. This is not true for me. I am interested in being with the characters and happy when they solve difficult problems. Blood and gore are not needed to keep me reading, honest.
...
We have talked about cliff hangers before. I like it best when a book offers a solution and resolves the main trouble even if I can see that a sequel is coming. I mentioned the other night that I had to wait a loooong time in the Chet and Bernie series by Spencer Quinn where Bernie was left in a bad situation. Yes, there was a sentence that gave me hope, but until the new book Heart of Barkness came out the other day, I was left to worry. Bernie’s friends actually bet on whether he would live or die according to the story.
…
And then there are the series where the publisher doesn’t allow the author to publish the third book after I enjoyed the first two, or the author does not bother to finish it. I know of three of these situations and it doesn’t make me happy.

Do you have a favorite sequel to a book? Is there a really bad one you want to warn us about?
