Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum.
I’ve come to think of this post as one where you come for the music and stay for the conversation—so feel free to drop a note. The diarist gets to sleep in if she so desires and can show up long after the post is published. So you know, it's a feature, not a bug.

Good morning everyone—I hope your Thursday is a good one so far. This week begins a three-part series on western art, which I hope to follow with a series on eastern and then African art. The series is a bit lengthy but after listening to a number of “History of Art” videos I found these pretty accessible (without the pretentious attitude of many of them and with a genuine exuberance Rick Steves seems to have for his subject).
Now I need to give some thought to an essay I’m working on. I woke this morning with the spark of an idea: “I should be polishing my shoes, but instead I’m ….” So I’m off to my own imaginary mosaic until I have to drag myself to work.
Cheers and let’s be kind today.
