- My general locale is coastal northwest Washington state, a mix of habitats from shrubs to woods to roadside to beach overlook.
- New birds: 3. New total for me: 70
Yellow warbler: Aug 19
These seasonal beauties came through the yard several times in late summer, to the fountain and feeding on bugs in the eucalyptus tree. Haven’t seen any warblers for a couple of weeks.
The other two new birds don’t migrate, I just hadn’t seen them yet.
Sharpshinned hawk: Aug 31
The Sharpie was a juvenile.
Band tailed Pigeons: September 6
The Bandtails are uncommon in my yard, I think not woodsy enough. Could also be competition with the more aggressive European Collared doves, who are around most of the time, and now with youngsters.
I think I saw a Flycatcher, most likely Hammond’s, but not sure enough to report.
Other youngsters are pretty much up to speed now, the finches, woodpeckers, sparrows, nuthatches, chickadees and all. Birdfeeders peaked in June and July, then starting early August use of seed/suet declined dramatically. I still see plenty of youngsters around the yard, so they are finding wild food. Or didn’t survive the post-fledge week’s. Sharpie presence is one clue. Early days out of the nest have a steep learning curve.
Please add your latest Birdrace update a comment below about who you’re seeing and any interesting behavior as we move out of breeding season. Any migrants coming or going? Seeing youngsters?

This diary is also The Daily Bucket for today.
Raccoons continue to visit my backyard at night, going for the pears and apples. Also making free with the birdbath. Based on the size of the ones in this latest trailcam photo, they look like kits.
The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge.
