Hello, writers. Next week’s Write On! will be hosted by the doughty mettle fatigue.
With NaNoWriMo three Thursdays away, it’s a good time to start preparing so that you’ll be ready to hit the ground running on November 1st.
If your goal is to generate 50k words (or some other number of words) then it’s a good idea to spend some time this month planning what you’re going to write.
If you don’t plan, you’re likely to write along at a goodly clip and then come to a sudden halt, decide you’re out of ideas, and abandon the project. (With me that sudden halt happens between 10k and 20k, although even if I plan, I have to stop and do more planning at 30k.)
If your goal is to organize your previous writing, then this month you might want to get your workspace ready so that you have room to spread out.
If your goal is to submit your work for publication or to agents, then you could prepare by putting together a database for tracking your submissions, or by identifying the agents or editors you want to query.
If your goal is to revise, then you might spend this month working on a revision plan.
What is your goal, and how do you plan to prepare for it?
Since the above doesn’t lend itself to a tonight's challenge, try this:
Describe the first snowflakes of the year as seen through the eyes of someone who has never seen snow before (but knows what it is).
Now describe them as seen through the eyes of someone who has broken six bones falling on ice and hates winter.
Limit each description to 25 words.
Write On! will be a regular Thursday feature (8 pm ET 5 pm PT) until it isn’t. Before signing a contract with any agent or publisher, please be sure to check them out on Preditors and Editors, Absolute Write and/or Writer Beware
