Update: Getting a lot of pushback and I see where you are coming from. Oversight and investigations will continue post impeachment. I would bet the farm it will happen in the next 2-3 weeks. Democrats have a crime to point to. This is not a court. That’s the Senate. -Mike
A situation you will never see...
Detective: “We have a public confession, murder weapon with fingerprints and pictures of the suspect committing the crime”.
Prosecutor: “Let’s hold off on an indictment until we have clear cut evidence he did it”
The White House’s strategy to step on Gordon Sondland’s combustible congressional testimony today by admitting to the crime will likely go down as the most comically inept defense strategy ever perpetrated. Possibly they oversubscribed to the theory that the coverup is worse than the crime. The actual crime, it turns out, is much worse.
Today’s Mick Mulvaney confession that the Trump administration did in fact hold back the military funds from Ukraine in order to get an investigation going in to the Democrats over a conspiracy theory that most likely was originated by the Russians reads like a movie script that would have been rejected as too outlandish to be believed.
Mulvaney, whether acting on orders from Trump or on his own, handed the Democrats everything they needed today to fast track a House of Representatives vote on articles of impeachment next week. To wait any longer in this age of diminishing attention spans is to risk it getting displaced by other chaos that this president might employ to distract public attention.
Other investigations can proceed concurrently and the Turkey/Syria debacle has seemed to soften the resolve of a growing a number of Republicans in the Senate, whether they will admit it publicly or not. Time to hand this potato to them while it’s steaming hot. It will be on them to stand up for our democracy or have their names dubiously included in the history books as enablers of a tyrant.
