Chicago Sun-Times: Teachers union makes plans in case strike goes through Thursday — and possibly next week by Nader Issa
The day after Chicago Teachers Union leaders said their hopes were “dashed” for a quick end to their strike, union officials are making plans in case a work stoppage stretches through later this week or possibly goes into next week.
Aiming to up the pressure on Mayor Lori Lightfoot, the union is planning a Wednesday morning rally around City Hall during the mayor’s first budget address.
For Thursday, the CTU is calling for a national day of action, asking teachers around the country to show support for Chicago’s striking teachers.
“What you can do to help support is you can wear red this Thursday, October 24,” CTU president Jesse Sharkey says in a video posted to the union’s Twitter account just before 2 p.m. Tuesday.
“Wear your red colors to work or out in public, and also you can take photos of yourself in solidarity and post them on your social media accounts under #putitinwriting,” Sharkey said.
Here’s a GunFail for David Waldman and Kagro
Miami Herald: This teen was riding in the backseat of an Uber. Then the driver’s gun went off, cops say. By Carli Teproff and Devoun Cetoute
Bailey Braun was sitting in the back seat of an Uber with her boyfriend, Alcy Zaldivar, on Sunday when they heard what they described as “an explosion.”
At first, the teenagers — who were heading to her Aventura home from his home in Broward — didn’t realize it was the sound of a gun going off.
“I didn’t feel the gunshot,” 15-year-old Bailey told the Miami Herald. “When I lifted my foot over the seat I saw blood coming out.”
The bullet had hit Bailey’s ankle.
On Tuesday, police said the Uber driver, 27-year-old Adrian Harper, had stopped near the Hollywood Police Department to pick up two passengers and was moving his gun to secure it in the holster when it went off.
Detroit Free Press: Warren Mayor Jim Fouts says audio is 'manufactured, politically motivated' by Cristina Hall
Two weeks before Warren's city election in which Mayor Jim Fouts is seeking a fourth term, a video was posted online Monday with audio purportedly of his voice saying he wanted to shoot a former chief of staff and friend in the head.
But the longtime politician told the Free Press on Tuesday that the latest audio recording that purportedly references his voice wanting to hurt Henry Krzystowczyk, who died in May, is "manufactured" and "politically motivated."
"This is obviously a last-minute, politically motivated gimmick to influence the election in an adverse way," Fouts said, adding: "And I don't have time to respond to all the gimmicks and election efforts being made by desperate candidates."
The video was posted late Monday night, on the same day that a critical article about Fouts — comparing his history of alleged scandalous remarks and behavior to that of President Donald Trump — appeared on the national news website Vice.com.
"If Trump is America's most scandal-resilient national politician, Fouts may be its most scandal-resilient mayor," the Vice article said, noting that blue-collar Macomb County helped turn the 2016 election for Trump.
Fouts is forever mouthing off about crazy shit...nd it has gotten racial on occasion, I don’t have a problem with the comparison of Fouts to Trump.
But...a note to Vice.com Yes, Macomb County voted for Trump over Clinton but Warren, MI voted for Hillary Clinton by a 10-point margin over Donald Trump.
Buzzfeed: Two Proud Boys Have Been Sentenced To Prison For Their Brutal New York City Assault by Julia Reinstein
Two members of the far-right Proud Boys group were sentenced to four years in prison on Tuesday for their roles in a violent brawl outside an event at the Metropolitan Republican Club in New York City last year.
Maxwell Hare, 27, and John Kinsman, 39, were found guilty in August of attempted gang assault, attempted assault, and riot for the brutal beatdown on Oct. 12, 2018.
The Proud Boys describe themselves as “Western chauvinists” and have aligned themselves closely with self-declared neo-Nazis. They are designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, while the FBI considers them "an extremist group with ties to white nationalism."
During the October assault, which took place after a speech by group founder Gavin McInnes, 10 members of the Proud Boys violently attacked four left-wing protesters after one of the protesters threw a bottle at the group.
When police showed up to the scene, the Proud Boys walked away without any of them being immediately arrested, sparking anger at the lack of swift police action.
Washington Post: An overlooked consequence of the Supreme Court’s gerrymandering rulings: Stricter abortion laws by Reis Thebault
For the next two months, petitioners will swarm Michigan ahead of late-December deadlines. They’ll knock on doors, flock to fairs and hand out pamphlets after church. Every day will be valuable, and every signature will get them a little bit closer to their goal: making it harder for women to get abortions in their home state.
If the volunteer fleet is successful, Michigan will join the list of states that have tightened restrictions on abortion rights this year. But, unlike those other states, which have overwhelmingly conservative governments, Michigan could pass antiabortion laws without the governor’s approval and without the support of a majority of voters.
If that happens, the legion of petitioners won’t be the only reason. Abortion rights advocates could also point the finger at a familiar specter: gerrymandering.
DW: Chile's president Pinera unveils social reforms to halt deadly protests
Responding to Chile's President Sebastian Pinera announced a package of social measures on Tuesday, following five days of violent proteststhat have left at least 15 people dead.
In a speech at the presidential palace in Santiago, president Pinera said he would increase the universal basic pension by 20%, freeze tariffs on electricity and proposed a law that would see the state cover the costs of expensive medical treatment.
"Faced with the legitimate needs and social demands of the citizenship, we have received with humility and clarity the message Chileans have given us," Pinera said.
Following his speech, the president took to Twitter to post the new social agenda saying that he has heard the voices of the Chilean people "loud and clear."
DW: Kurds in Turkey increasingly subject to violent hate crimes by Pelin Unker
National fervor is simmering in Turkey, as the country pursues its military offensive against Kurdish militias in northern Syria. Critics say that sentiment is behind a rise in discrimination against Kurds in the country, many of whom are Turkish citizens. Media reports about the issue have been on the rise as well.
Ekrem Yasli is one victim. On October 15, the 74-year-old man was accompanying his wife to a hospital in Canakkale, on Turkey's northwestern coast, when another man attacked him, reportedly for speaking Kurdish. "This is the Turkish Republic," he reportedly said to the Kurdish couple, before leaving the room and returning with a glass bottle. He then struck the elderly man on the head with it.
The man was charged, then acquitted, supposedly due to lack of evidence pointing to an anti-Kurdish motive. "There is no concrete evidence for this vague claim," said the local state prosecutor's office, rejecting the case.
Yasli's attorney, Necibe Inci Incesagir, told DW the fact that no police report was released denied her any opportunity to find out exactly what the investigation turned up. All she could say was that her client "had a serious head injury as a result." The elderly man could only report that the suspect appeared to be psychologically disturbed, but did not know if he had been arrested.
AlJazeera: Turkey, Russia reach deal for YPG move out of Syria border area but Umut Uras
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says a deal has been reached with Russia for Kurdish fighters to withdraw from a Turkish-ruled "safe zone" in northeast Syria within 150 hours, after which Ankara and Moscow will run joint patrols around the area.
The announcement was made after marathon talks in Sochi between Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, hours before a United States-brokered five-day truce between Turkish and Kurdish-led forces was due to expire.
On October 9, Turkey launched an offensive aimed at carving out a "safe zone" cleared of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which Ankara considers "terrorists", as well as at repatriating some of the 3.6 million refugees currently residing on its soil.
According to the deal announced at a joint news conference in Sochi, Ankara will control a 32km-wide (20 miles) area between the towns of Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ain, which covers 120km (75 miles) of the Turkish-Syrian border.
BBC News: Brexit: PM to push for election if EU offers longer delay
The PM will push for a general election if the EU proposes to delay Brexit until January, No 10 has indicated.
Boris Johnson "paused" his Brexit bill on Tuesday after MPs rejected his plan to get it signed off in three days.
Now EU leaders will consider whether to grant a delay to the 31 October Brexit deadline and what length it would be.
A letter Mr Johnson was forced by law to send to the bloc after failing to secure backing for his deal on Saturday calls for a three-month extension.
But a Downing Street source suggested the prime minister would not accept such a lengthy extension.
"On Saturday, Parliament asked for a delay until January and today Parliament blew its last chance," the source said.
