Welcome to the Street Prophets Coffee Hour cleverly hidden at the intersection of religion and politics. This is an open thread where we can share our thoughts and comments about the day. We’re going to start today with a trip to the aquarium. One of the underwater tunnels in the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport is Orford Reef.
According to the display:
“A reef can be a deepwater haven—the water here is calm, to deep to be stirred by restless surface waves. The rocks offer cracks and crevices for small animals to hide in.
Juvenile rockfishes take refuge along the reef where open water predators can’t maneuver well. Adult fishes, too, find shelter here. Crabs, sea urchins and other edible animals tuck themselves into rocky refuges, trying to escape being eaten.”
With regard to rockfishes, the display reports:
“There are over 60 species of rockfish along the Pacific coast. These longlived predators are highly territorial and have a strong attachment to their home site. The spines on a rockfish’s dorsal fin carry a painful venom.”
