Donald Trump watches a lot of television. He’s also intensely sensitive to criticism and tends to monitor it closely. But White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham wants us to believe Trump is not watching Wednesday’s first public impeachment hearing.
“He’s in the Oval in meetings,” she claimed. “Not watching. He’s working.”
Sure, if she means “in the Oval meeting with his TV” and “working to get back his phone from whoever confiscated it to keep him from tweeting,” I could believe that … if Trump hadn’t retweeted clips of the hearing. So maybe by “not watching,” Grisham means that Trump is watching only clips carefully curated by his staff to keep him thinking things are going well for him. That, however, would still make “Not watching. He’s working” a lie. Since it comes from the Trump White House, though, a lie is to be expected.
