Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum.
I’ve come to think of this post as one where you come for the music and stay for the conversation—so feel free to drop a note. The diarist gets to sleep in if she so desires and can show up long after the post is published. So you know, it's a feature, not a bug.

For the last couple weeks I’ve been binging the six seasons of Northern Exposure, one of my favorite T.V. shows of all time. If you missed it, it was frequently funny, quirky, poignant, weird and touching. It was the last time CBS took a leap as far as I’m concerned. I find it comforting to go back and watch shows from the 90’s, the last time life seemed normal to me. That’s not to say that my life was normal. Like most folks it was chaotic trying to find my way as a newfound adult. But Northern Exposure influenced me. I felt calmer, inspired, cheered up after watching a good episode. Of course, like most young men (I would imagine), my favorite character was Chris Stevens. The poet ex-con philosopher badass longhair was the one I could identify with. He also had the best scenes that moved me, sometimes to tears.
So rub the sleep out of your eyes, greet another day and think back to a time when the world wasn’t an absolute clown car wreck. To betray that thought, here’s Chris about the here and now.
This was the song used for the finale. I found it enjoyable yet bittersweet. Appropriate for this kinda show.
