Jonathan Capeheart wrote up his views on Kamala Harris’s debate performance last night and it hit the bullseye.
Here’s the link…
Are we watching the liberation of Kamala Harris?
And here is the opening lede...
A lot of digital ink has been spilled on the hot mess of dysfunction and departures that has become the presidential campaign of Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.). But something is happening with the candidate herself. The real Kamala, the down-home pol I have gotten to know since we first met in 2012, is coming through, and I like it.
The first sign of the Harris reemergence took place at the Liberty and Justice event hosted by the Iowa Democratic Party on Nov. 1 in Des Moines. From the moment Harris said, “We all know why we’re here,” her serious tone and demeanor when she said it signaled a new beginning.
My goal in writing a diary on Capeheart’s analysis is to make sure Kamala’s strongest performance in the debates yet did not go unnoticed. And to make sure people here are aware that many commentators noticed it, too.
I don’t want to re-post his entire analysis of Kamala’s newfound upward mobility here. That wouldn’t be appropriate. I also realize if you regularly check Washington Post then you may have already used up any & all free reads you get without a subscription. But as a supporter and volunteer for Kamala’s campaign, I think Capeheart has zeroed in like a laser on what Kamala is getting right and how it is helping revitalize her campaign:
The consistent knock against her, otherwise, has been that she is too cautious. That’s gone.
From her passionate and heartfelt speech in Iowa on November 1st to her new commercial that’s winning rave reviews to her excellent performance in the debate last night, Kamala is fighting back hard to win over voters everywhere.
Perhaps I’m hoping that a campaign and a candidate that held out so much promise when she announced in Oakland, Calif., back in January is getting back on track. (Full disclosure: My husband volunteered on the Harris launch.) Or maybe, just maybe, the candidate who has always been better than the campaign around her has decided to run like she has nothing to lose — because she doesn’t.
With Gavin Newsom scheduling to campaign for her in Iowa, Senator Harris’s profile in the media is most likely going to continue to rise. There are still 75 days until the Iowa caucuses. After her performance in the debate last night and all the positive press she’s gotten this morning, I feel a new sense of hope for her campaign now more than ever.
I hope that voters are open to seeing that, too.
