Cell Phone
Mrs. side pocket has resisted getting a cell phone for so long that a friend declared “You need one.” Reluctantly she accepted a simple used phone, and we pushed various buttons and tabs with mixed results. Our visiting daughter examined it and advised that if she were going to enter the cellphone universe she should at least get something more modern with more features. As our daughter explained, considering that it would mainly used for emergencies the monthly cost could be minimal.
I have a smartphone which has a huge number of apps. How do they get there? Weekly it updates these apps and most of them I’ve never seen before and would never use. And for this plethora of progress I pay more than $50 a month. I am presently reconsidering this. To be fair I used the hotspot extensively during the power failures, so there’s that.
So two nights ago we were up very late and we heard an insistent and previously unknown beeping. We were groggy but searched the house. Smoke alarm? Checked them and that was not it. CO2 alarm? The oven, the microwave? No. It was coming from her new phone. It stopped, to our relief, so we went to bed. It started again. We pushed buttons to no avail. Finally we put it outside, where it remains. The mystery remains...the damn thing was off!
One of my favorite cookbooks is called Winterthur's Culinary Collection. These recipes were gathered from people associated with the estate. Published in 1983, the recipes mostly call for rich ingredients with no hint of frugality or health concerns. I make this chicken dish often, simple, but with lots of stirring.
Chicken in Raspberry Cream Sauce
Dredge 4 chicken breasts in flour and saute them in butter and oil until tender but not overcooked. Set aside. Add ½ cup raspberry vinegar and boil. Add chicken and 1 cup stock, and simmer for 10 minutes; remove chicken. Now for the fun: boil the liquid at high heat while furiously whisking till it’s thickened, then add 1 cup whipping cream and thicken more. Serve over the chicken.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
