Released in 1983, the TRS-80 Model 100 was one of the first notebook computers.
It weighed 3.1 pounds, had an 8 line display, a “massive” 32K of RAM, and a 20 hour life on 4 AA batteries, a 300 Baud model, and a pretty good full size keyboard.
In the day, technophobic journalists loved this.
I’m considering doing some (very amateur) coverage of the primaries, and I’d like something with similar capabilities as my on the road system.
Basidcally, it woudl be used for entering text with minimal (Bold, Italic, etc.) formatting, add at the end of the day, polishing and layout would be done on a more capable system.
The basic requirements would be:
- A simple word processor that can output to various standards.
- A good keyboard.
- Connectivity, either via WiFi, or via plugging a phone in via USB (or both).
- A similar battery life to the TRS80 Mod 100. (20 hours on, 30 days standby)
- A bare bones browser/email capability.
I am not concerned about something I can play Game of Thrones on, not do I need the ability to create documents with media.
I want it to be simple, light, have a long battery life, and a good keyboard for writing.
Nice to haves would be:
- The ability to drive a secondary display.
- The ability to save to a USB stick and cloud.
- Color display.
- A Tetris Game.
Is there anything like this out there? (Hell the capabilities of an old TRS-80 model 100 could fit on a single chip with space to spare these days).
