Chicago Sun-Times: Multiple CPD employees under investigation for allegedly covering up Eddie Johnson’s indiscretions by Fran Spielman, Frank Main, and Sam Charles
Multiple Chicago police employees are under investigation for allegedly engaging in a widespread cover-up to protect then-Supt. Eddie Johnson and conceal the circumstances surrounding an Oct. 17 drinking and driving incident that Mayor Lori Lightfoot says Johnson lied about, prompting her to fire him weeks before his retirement.
Johnson was found slumped over in his police SUV at around 12:30 a.m. that day, near the 3400 block of South Aberdeen — after dismissing his driver and trying to drive himself home.
The alleged cover-up took place “that night and the next day” and could end up being “even worse than” the incident itself, said a source familiar with Inspector General Joseph Ferguson’s ongoing investigation.
That’s saying something, considering new details obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.
The Oregonian: A Portland boy fell in his wheelchair at school, fracturing 2 bones. Nobody told his mom for days, $2.8M suit says by Eder Campuzano
The mother of an east Portland middle schooler is suing the district after her son fell in his wheelchair and fractured both his thigh bones, an incident she says school staff didn’t tell her about until three days after it happened.
Sherry Schregardus said her son, Devin, who has cerebral palsy and is non-verbal, took a spill at school on Dec. 1, 2017 after his teachers failed to properly belt him in. But school officials only told her about it after doctors took X-rays during an emergency room visit at Legacy Randall Children’s Hospital many hours later.
Schregardus recalled staffers at Ron Russell Middle School in the David Douglas district texted her at 10:29 a.m. that day, saying Devin was “whining,” according to court documents.
Schregardus replied to the text, telling school staff to give the boy Tylenol or ibuprofen. A staffer later texted Schregardus to say Devin “seems better” after taking the medicine. He went home on the bus later that day, according to a suit Schregardus filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Missouri lawmakers float plan to let college athletes get paid by Kurt Erickson
JEFFERSON CITY — Following the lead of California, Missouri lawmakers have introduced a proposal to allow college athletes to profit from their name and image.
Rep. Nick Schroer, an O’Fallon Republican, filed legislation Tuesday to let athletes make money off their fame. Rep. Wes Rogers, D-Kansas City, plans to introduce a similar plan later this month, with an eye on debating the issue when lawmakers return to action in January.
“I think that it’s just time to make sure these kids are able to — I hate to use the word ‘profit’ — but able to just get what’s fair after they put their hearts and souls into these programs,” Rogers said.
In October, the Illinois House approved similar legislation, which allows college athletes to sign paid endorsement deals and hire agents while preserving their scholarships and NCAA eligibility.
Buzzfeed: Kamala Harris Is Ending Her Presidential Campaign by Ruby Cramer, Molly Hensley-Clancy and Katherine Miller
Kamala Harris is ending her presidential campaign, marking a stunning early exit for the California senator who was once considered to be in the top tier of the Democratic field. She informed staff today that she is suspending her campaign, according to an aide.
"I’ve taken stock and looked at this from every angle, and over the last few days have come to one of the hardest decisions of my life," Harris wrote in a Medium post to supporters. "My campaign for president simply doesn’t have the financial resources we need to continue."
Harris, the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, launched her campaign before a crowd of some 20,000 people in Oakland in January. She rocketed in polls over the summer after she confronted former vice president Joe Biden over the issue of race at the first Democratic debate, one of the most memorable moments of the campaign so far.
Reuters: Trump says China trade deal may have to wait amid sticking points in talks by Steve Holland and William Schomburg
LONDON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Tuesday a trade deal with China might have to wait until after the U.S. presidential election in November 2020, denting hopes that the two largest economies would soon reach an initial deal to ease their damaging trade war.
“I have no deadline, no,” Trump told reporters in London, where he was due to attend a meeting of NATO leaders.
“In some ways, I like the idea of waiting until after the election for the China deal. But they want to make a deal now, and we’ll see whether or not the deal’s going to be right; it’s got to be right.”
Trump's remarks sent stock prices tumbling and triggered a rush into safe assets such as U.S. Treasury debt. MSCI's measure of global stock performance slid 0.9%, while the U.S. benchmark S&P 500 Index .SPX dropped 1.22%, its largest fall in nearly two months.
Washington Post: As impeachment inquiry rages at home, Trump unsettles the world stage at NATO by Ashley Parker, Philip Rucker, and Michael Birnbaum
LONDON — President Trump openly jousted with French President Emmanuel Macron — a leader who until recently had been one of Trump’s earliest and most prominent partners in bromance.
He thrust Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau uncomfortably into the spotlight, dubbing Trudeau’s country “slightly delinquent” and asking for Canada’s “number” on meeting its financial commitment to NATO’s shared defense.
And he previewed a likely confrontation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, with whom he is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, also over Germany’s financial contributions to NATO.
On the first day of the NATO 70th anniversary summit in London, Trump pronounced, prodded and pushed America’s allies into a state of unbalance — seizing the global stage to both bully and banter, all while keeping himself at the center of attention.
AlJazeera: Greece and Turkey set for showdown over maritime borders by John Psaropoulos
Athens, Greece - Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are set to hold a tense meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit in London on Wednesday, following Ankara's announcement that it had reached an agreement with Libya to delineate their maritime economic interests.
A map published by Turkey shows the Turkish and Libyan Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) meeting midway across the Mediterranean, over an area also claimed by Greece.
"I shall put to President Erdogan all the issues relating to Turkish provocation," Mitsotakis told his colleagues. "We will talk openly. And it is in Turkey's interest to retrench from provocative moves."
Erdogan was unrelenting: "There is a request from the Greek prime minister for us to meet and we shall discuss these matters in that meeting," he said.
Guardian: EU mission tells Malta PM to quit immediately over Caruana Galizia case by Jennifer Rankin
The head of an EU mission to Malta has called on the country’s embattled prime minister to quit immediately amid anger over his handling of the investigation into the murder of the journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
The Dutch liberal MEP Sophie in ‘t Veld, who is leading the European parliament’s emergency fact-finding mission to Malta, said she was “not reassured” after meeting Joseph Muscat and his justice minister, Owen Bonnici.
“I think everybody recognises, including the prime minister himself, that he has made some serious errors of judgment and I would say that staying on longer than necessary is another error of judgment,” she told reporters in Valleta.
She said trust between the EU and Malta had been seriously damaged, and that Muscat had done little to allay concerns.
