The order will effectively interpret Judaism as a nationality, not just a religion, to trigger a federal law penalizing colleges and universities deemed to be shirking their responsibility to foster an open climate for minority students, according to the officials, who insisted on anonymity to discuss the matter before the announcement.
I’m throwing this up hastily as I have to leave soon. On the surface this is a move to punish free speech on college campuses that have groups supporting BDS. I’m personally against the settlements, and most things the Israeli government has done in regards to the occupation, but not in favor of BDS myself. However, this order could have broader implications. It evokes for me pre-enlightenment laws used in Europe to separate Jewish people from the rest of the population, which later were used to justify preventing Jews from owning property, serving in government, and so forth.
I’m Jewish, but my nationality is American. This is an alarming development to me, and I think to many others. Please help shine a light on this. Your opinion of BDS should not be a factor. This is wrong, and dangerous.
