Two things you need to know beforehand:
1)I have been sick.
2)My daughter had my car.
I got really hungry, like I do when I am sick. I thought about it for quite a while before I called the local Thai place for tangerine chicken and rice. It would be ready in 20 minutes. I set the timer, got dressed and left when the timer went off.
Out in the driveway, there are 2 dead old Toyota trucks that belong to Lil Zen but not my alive Rav4. Oh yeah, she has my car. Oh dear, the Thai place is about a mile away. I won’t be able to walk there before my food is cold, so I call them and they agree to fix it to be ready in about 25 minutes. Ok.
Out in the driveway again, I see my neighbor and after some pleasantries, I tell him my woes and he says he is going to work right near the restaurant and he takes me. The food is fresh and hot and I eat there since it will be cold by the time I can walk home. Yum.
I take the leftovers, start home. On the way, I meet a homeless man who is very polite as he refuses the Thai food-Thank you so much, maybe next time. I move on.
I turn down a small street I drive all the time. It is an industrial area, workmen and a homeless man in a tent. I see 4 Latino men standing around, laughing and chatting and they see me. Something about me interests them and they turn to intently look at me. I say to them “What brings you 4 Latino gentlemen out to stare at a little old lady” and they laugh and say they thought I was the lady that sells (Mexican pastries) and they were going to buy some. Sorry, no pastries but if the homeless man is home, I will offer him the Thai food. They say he is in so I go to his tent, lean down and say loudly “Sir? Sir, are you home?” He comes to the door and says yes, I offer the food, he takes it, I go.
I finally get home, it has taken me about 20 minutes to walk that mile, I have spoken to 6 strangers, all polite and kindly to me, I have given some food to someone who probably needs it and I got to eat.
It was a successful trip.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

When I tell my daughter, she is rather upset that I am alone on the street, not well, talking to strangers and homeless people WITHOUT her to protect me. That she would be worried about me never occurred to me. I am a 30 year resident, a grown woman in her own neighborhood, I did not feel unsafe or worried. I guess I am at the age I need to reconsider how I keep myself safe, at least as far as she is concerned.
Add to this that I fell in the shower the night before. Just a bruise on my hip, no breaks or real pain. There is talk now of hand rails and slip mats and shower seats because I am getting to that age. At least I will get a lovely bamboo shower bench, seen here.
I’ll be 69 next month.
