No Senate witnesses? No problem.
Pelosi should make it crystal clear that if the appropriate witnesses do not appear at the Senate trial and if a fair trial is not held, then the House will restart new impeachment hearings promptly.
One of the big Republican complaints is that the House was rushed and sloppy, and that the articles are incomplete. Never mind that obstruction and withholding evidence is the reason. Well, if they want more complete articles, the House should provide them.
No hurried job. The original two articles are now before the Senate so the House can now take their time and investigate every aspect of the new evidence. Let’s be deliberate and thorough. We now can delve into the evidence in excruciating detail. Slowly. If a sham trial in the Senate takes place, then Republicans will know that new articles are coming.
Not only would new articles tie up the Senate again (which is up to no good under Republican control) but also serve as counterprogramming for the Senate trials and a way to expose new and much more damning evidence to the American people during a Presidential election year.
In this way, Pelosi still has enormous leverage over the Senate process. She can force Republicans to have a fair trial because if they don’t, they will get an avalanche of new evidence to deal with down the road anyway. House hearings could be held with new subpoenaed witnesses simultaneously with the Senate trial. No reason why not.
And bad enough that Republicans may vote to acquit. They may have to vote to acquit twice. Or maybe three times. Who knows, maybe some Republicans would vote for conviction during the next impeachment round, after their primary filing deadlines have passed.
