I finished the above quilt this week. It is not big, about 48in square. It started off as a workshop project that would have been a table runner. It kind of ran away. The quilter had one like this in her trunk show as well as the small one for the workshop so I opted for this version. I didn't like her butterflies, so I went to clip art and got this design and adapted it. All in all, this was a lot of work in a process that I was not too thrilled with but it came out better than I had imagined it would. Come below for a couple of close ups of the two kinds of blocks.
DK Quilt Guild is a place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too.
Would you like to write a future DK Quilt Guild diary? We NEED writers! Your diary can be elaborate and full of photos, a simple story of your own quilting history or that of someone you love, a discussion of a current project or a technique you're learning, new adventures... You could post quilt retreat-day recipes (things like crockpot meals, so food appears without much attention from you)... We could do show and tell or open thread, also, but either way, we need diarists to host. It is EASY if you're willing to take the chance. Please join in! Please volunteer within the comments or you can send Pam from Calif a kosmail.
These are all just simple echo stitched twice around for quilting. They puffed up nicely without much ado. In person, they sort of vibrate.
All of the free butterflies have little “gems” at the tips of their wings. The gems are just little pieces of metal with a pattern stamped in them to look like there is a stone there. So you get the bling without worrying about losing the stone. I glued them on with fabric glue. I did a looping meander free motion design that gives them movement.
I also finished this art wall hanging from the workshop a couple of weeks ago. It is small, about 20 x 36 so it didn’t take much time. I had fun doing the quirky quilting.
There are tiny star fish and other shells glues here along the ridge of the 2nd and 3rd strips of sand but they blend in too well to see here. There is also a string of baby beads that says “Time stretches near the sea” and you can see the colors of them even if you can’t read them. Then there are the cute little crabs in the corner.
The mermaid fits well I think and her banner says “Be a mermaid in a sea of fish.” Then there is the metal dolphin leaping in the mid right.
I used the “facing” method of binding so that there is none showing on the front to limit the view. I never heard of it before but sure do like it. You sew on the binding strips like normal, but you fold them all the way to the back, along the seam line, so that none of the binding shows on the front. The finished piece has no eye stopping frame around it and the view seems to go right off the edges. I might have used it on the butterflies quilt if I had known about it but I am not taking the binding off and replacing it.
I am actually amazed at this piece and may make another in the future. Both of these will go to the silent auction at our quilt show.
