January 26 is Australia Day!
“But,” you might point out, “today is January 27.”
Well yes, if you follow the the traditional calendar in all other countries in the world. But in Australia, January 26 will stretch itself over 48 hours this year.
“Um,” you might reasonably respond, “why?”
Because Australia Day is a national holiday. Only this year it fell on a Sunday which is already a day off for most Aussies so Monday was acquired as the holiday we’ll have when we’d otherwise miss out on the holiday we should have and, since it’s the Australia Day holiday and that’s always January 26, Monday is now January 26 too!
“What about January 27?” You ask. “Will that be Tuesday for you now?”
Oh no! That would be silly! We’ll go straight onto January 28 tomorrow and just give January 27 a miss this year. Fortunately there’s an extra day next month so it all works out really well!
