I was wondering if Andrew Johnson ran against U.S. Grant in the 1868 election so I went and consulted Wikipedia. Turns out Johnson started out running for a second term, but lost out at the July 1868 convention in New York to Horatio Seymour.
Then I read this bit about the 1869 inauguration that cheered me up:
Grant had made it known that he was unwilling to ride in the same carriage as Johnson, as was customary, and Johnson refused to go to the inauguration at all. Despite an effort by Seward to prompt a change of mind, he spent the morning of March 4 finishing last-minute business, and then shortly after noon rode from the White House to the home of a friend.
I usually imagine the Secret Service hauling Trump out of the White House during the wee hours of January 20, 2021.
But now I’m going to imagine him live-tweeting his disdain of the next president from Mar-A-Lago. There is no way he will be at the inauguration.
Well… he’ll be live-tweeting until @Jack cuts him off at 9:01 am EST when he’s no longer president.
