Sen. Lisa Murkowski did what was always inevitable late Monday evening by announcing that yes, of course she would vote to acquit Donald Trump. She’s a Republican in the age of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Being a Republican who likes to have a reputation as a moderate, Murkowski, the senior senator from Alaska, talked a lot about how sad she was about the whole thing and how Trump’s behavior was “shameful and wrong,” but of course she had to slam Democrats equally, because, well, if she didn’t, her vote to acquit would be even more ridiculous.
“The House failed in its responsibilities and the Senate—the Senate should be ashamed by the rank partisanship that has been on display here,” Murkowski said in her floor speech. “So many in this chamber share my sadness for the present state of our institutions. It’s my hope that we’ve finally found bottom here.”
Yeah, you know how you don’t find bottom? You empower Donald Trump to keep dragging you and the nation down ever lower. Behaving as a rank partisan but saying you’re sad about it won’t change a damn thing.
Senate Republicans 2020: There is no bottom.
This is why we need to retake the Senate. Can you chip in $1 to help the Democratic nominee in each of these competitive states?
