I suspect most people here are pro-choice. I am for one simple reason, why should any MAN attempt to legislate what any woman chooses in regards to her health care or body? Roe vs. Wade is the law and yet we still have neanderthals trying to bring back the days of women being property and subjugated by clubbing. The only difference is using legislation instead of a stick.
So if forcing women to have unwanted children is acceptable to many men in the GOP, it is likewise acceptable for men to be told they are required to have vasectomies.
Washington (CNN) An Alabama Democratic lawmaker has a unique response to a recent law limiting abortion rights in the state: require men to undergo vasectomies either when they hit 50 or have three children.
Such would be the case
under a new bill from Rep. Rolanda Hollis that was introduced on Thursday.
"Under existing law, there are no restrictions on the reproductive rights of men. This measure would require a man to undergo a vasectomy within one month of his 50th birthday or the birth of his third biological child, whichever comes first," the bill says.
Personally, I think 50 is too old and that the age required should be 40. While we are at it, let’s change the bill so that the requirement is after men father 2 children, in or out of wedlock. This bill may be slightly tongue in cheek, yet it also meshes with many of the other ills humans (again mostly men) have perpetrated on the planet. Overpopulation is the primary driver for deforestation, climate change, famine, over harvesting of ocean stocks, and the reduction of underground aquifers.
"The vasectomy bill is to help with the reproductive system, and yes, it is to neutralize the abortion ban bill ... it always takes two to tango," Hollis told the outlet. "We can't put all the responsibility on women. Men need to be responsible also."
Under the bill, men who reach the age threshold will have to undergo the vasectomy at their "own expense."
I chuckled at the suggestion , “men need to be responsible also”. As the pussy grabber in chief, Epstein, and Weinstein show, responsibility is NOT a trait that seems to be valued of those driven by self interest. The #MeToo movement proves that there are many bad actors happy to shirk personal responsibility in favor of subjugating females.
Making men pay for the privilege of having a vasectomy is in keeping with the spirit of the law. It is also in keeping with primarily male attempts to remove planned parenting choices from women. I can’t explain the GOP goal in any other way while they try to deny a woman’s choice and remove the healthcare of the mothers to be prior to birth and the unplanned children post birth. These goals try to make women financially liable.
Randall Marshall, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama, told CNN, “Look, on the one hand, everybody knows that this bill isn't going anywhere. But it really does underscore the hypocrisy of Alabama's legislature in making medical decisions for women that it would never dream of making for men."
I don’t think the Alabama GOPers will recognize their hypocrisy. I doubt they really give a damn. It still seems like poetic justice to me to have this bill introduced. What’s good for the goose, is good for the gander.
p.s. Been there, done that. Got the t-shirt in my 30’s.
