Each of Our Resistance Actions Matter
There are No Small Volunteer Activities (only short volunteers)
Don’t have a particular candidate yet? Perfect!
Reach out to your county party now and volunteer to:
Register voters
This is a great time to reach new voter at libraries, farmers’ markets, new developments, apartments, grocery stores, and liberal churches/temples/mosques that will welcome you, if you ask permission and are friendly to all. I try to go to areas where I will find more Dems than Rs, but you accept and submit all registration forms received.
Phone Bank
Your local precinct may love to have volunteers use this time to call Dems in your area: 1) seeking volunteers for election season (just around the corner); 2) for get-togethers and party building events; 3) to clean up lists to remove old and out-of-date names and phone numbers. (The last may seem boring, but all the out-of-service numbers you clean up now, will help candidates and your local party in the Fall.)
We made phone calls to Dems in a purple/red county in NC asking registered Dems if they wanted to meet other Dems in their county. One guy said “Hell yes! I didn’t know that there were any other Dems in my county.”
Canvass
Knocking on doors is the single best way to contact voters. Now is a great time to welcome newcomers to the neighborhood, help them to register to vote, then them know the voting location or voting rules in your state.
It can also be a good time to do a “deep canvas” in your area. This involves a lot of listening to discover the concerns and important issues of your fellow Dems. You are not trying to sell a candidate or secure a voter commitment. You are there to ask open ended questions, and gather information for your local party or candidate. (This only works if your precinct, county, or candidate is prepared to deal with this incoming information and is able to respond to the voter’s interest in a timely manner.)
Or you can be a “street/block/neighborhood captain” who gets to know your area’s Dems, maybe hosts a cookout/party/coffee, and commits to doing literature drops when/if needed.
Write Postcards
Lots of county parties and other interested Dem groups will have folks write to other Dems to encourage them to vote this season.
This works best for newly registered voters as a sign of welcome and for older voters who value a hand-written note. This is not a time to scold folks for not voting in the past.
Instead you stay positive and address them as fellow voters who want to make a positive difference in the country they love.
TEXT
Couldn’t possibly call a stranger or knock on the door of someone you don’t know?? That’s okay.
Ask if your county uses a software texting program to invite folks to volunteer get-togethers, remind them that early voting has started, invite them to meet a new town council candidate, ask them to an election night party, or lots of other options.
You can join a texting team. This is a great point of contact, if not overused. It’s fast, gives great timely info (typically you have a short script), and then it’s over.
Donate
All of these actions involve donating time, which is of great and irreplaceable value. If you can also donate money, great. Whether it’s a one-time gift, a recurring gift, or the max, it is of value to your candidate of choice or local party.
